Reforestation for Africa
We are now runnning a center where we plant trees and provide seedlings to people. By doing so we are aiming at reviving the environment by replacing the trees that have been cut down for use as firewood, building etc. At the same time we make the population aware of the importance of planting trees.
Our nursery has different kinds of trees. We have eucalyptus which is a fast growing tree. In addition we have a wide selection of local fruit trees which willnot only help with the environment but also provide fruit that can be consumed locally or the people can sell for an income.
We already have a resource center and have identified sub centers in the district for easy distribution of the seedlings.
The center is offering the following activities:-
General training on the importance of saving the environment and practising agroforestry. We invite the foresters and agriculture officers to give lectures. We also have group discussions and use video shows.
We have the video show on saving the environment and the gains of agroforestry at market places, churches, schools, Chief's camps, sub-centers and the main resource center.
Work plan and budget activities
1. Planting of seeds:- Our plan is to plant seeds to have the seedlings ready for the rainy season.
2. We have a resource center.
3. Recruitment of field staff and training them. This is done by foresters.
4. Identifying sub-centers in other parts of the district
5. Mobilization and sensitization of the Community.
6. Training of the community on tree planting
7. Distribution of seedlings to the community and monitoring the planting of the seedlings.
8. Field staff to follow up on planted seedlings.
9. Presentation of activities reports to the donor.

Solongo are ready to repeat this exercise as many times as there is need.
Our tree nursery is situated on the main Kisumu/Kakamega road some 100 metres from the Eldoret junction. It lies between the Ministry of works Depot and the Keveye Tea Buying Center. We always get technical help from the KARi station at Maseno and the trained foresters from the district offices.
Our youth have been trained in the making of nurseries and tree planting. They have staged shows in Kakamega, Kisumu, Nairobi and Machakos.
